Botox
What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a trademark of Allergan Inc, and a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. There are several brands that carry purified versions of botulinum toxin. At Mid-Maine Oral Surgery we carry and administer BOTOX only.
What is BOTOX used for?
It is used to soften or prevent the formation of wrinkles when the face is in motion. It accomplishes this by permanently interrupting the communication between nerve endings and their target muscle. It is injected in the muscle using one or multiple injections, causing the muscle to be weakened. BOTOX is commonly used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows (the 11s), forehead wrinkles, bunny lines, and crow’s feet.

Are the effects permanent?
BOTOX typically follows the “rule of 3s”: you see an effect by day 3, the max effect is at 3 weeks, and the effect lasts approximately 3 months. At 3 months after injection, the previously interrupted communication is re-established via a process called sprouting. New nerve endings are created and restore the prior connection. It is at this time that repeat injection is necessary to maintain the desired effect.
What doesn’t BOTOX do?
BOTOX does not eliminate ‘static wrinkles’, or wrinkles that are present when the face is at rest. BOTOX injection is more of a preventative method to delay deep wrinkles from eventually forming.

What can go wrong?
Many patients are concerned about a “frozen look.” The amount of ‘units’ necessary to get the desired effect varies from person to person and an experienced injector will help achieve your desired result without overtreatment. Heavy brows or droopy eyelids are another concern, but again this is typically easily avoided with an appropriate exam and avoidance of certain areas of the face. There is often a delicate balance between preventing wrinkles and still allowing for a natural degree of expression. Although rare, you may need to return for additional injections to achieve the ideal result.
Following treatment
Following your BOTOX treatment you should avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours, but you may resume normal daily activity. Some aching at the injection site or pinpoint bleeding is common, mild pressure will help stop bleeding quickly. If you have altered vision, droopy eyelids, or otherwise undesired effect please call your provider.
